Why should I take care of my cholesterol?

There are risk factors that increase the chances of cholesterol rising. Taking care of yourself is basic so that it does not happen.


Arteriosclerosis or high cholesterol is a complex disease, which does not produce symptoms directly and does not have a single origin. Therefore, it is essential that they be recognized and corrected as many as possible.

The first step to reduce high cholesterol is to modify the person’s habits :

Change the diet in the case that the weight is normal, and in case of overweight, also establish measures to reduce it.

Maintain a minimum physical activity level of 30 minutes per day

Quit smoking if you are a smoker

What is hypercholesterolemia and how to treat it?

The excess of cholesterol in our blood, also called hypercholesterolemia , is one of the main factors that can cause the formation of cardiovascular diseases. Currently, cardiovascular problems, such as those that directly affect the heart, have become one of the leading causes of death in Spain. We must be aware of the risks we run if we neglect our cholesterol levels.

To reduce the level of cholesterol and avoid cardiovascular disease, we must take into account the following factors and change our lifestyle to minimize the likelihood of having cardiovascular disease.

Smoking . Middle-aged men and women who smoke have a much higher risk of suffering a myocardial infarction. When quitting smoking, this risk decreases progressively.

Diet . Food is another important factor in relation to our cholesterol level. It is recommended to maintain a Mediterranean diet rich in cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, blue fish rich in omega3 fats and olive oil. On the other hand, limiting the consumption of fatty milk, red meat and sausages, with high content of harmful fats.

Alcohol . Its very moderate consumption increases HDL cholesterol and can reduce the negative effect of LDL cholesterol. However, it can produce both an increase in blood pressure and can damage organs such as the liver.

Exercise . Practicing exercise on a regular basis, even if it is not intense, has shown that it reduces the level of cholesterol and, consequently, the risk of suffering a coronary heart disease.

Excessive body weight . Obesity and overweight, especially fat in the abdomen, favor the onset of cardiovascular diseases. The loss, even slight, of that excess weight is beneficial.
